Ramakrishna Mission, a world wide religious organization was founded by Swami Vivekananda, chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in the year 1897. The Mission is headquartered in Belur near Kolkatta in West Bengal. Besides being a spiritual organization, the Mission also engages in extensive charitable work in the fields of healthcare, disaster relief, tribal welfare, and rural management. In 1937 under the inspiration of Swami Nirmalananda, a purely secularorganization called ‘Narendra Mission’ was formed at Trivandrum for the purpose of carrying out charitable work among the masses. The Narendra Mission purchased a small plot of land with an old, ill maintained building with just two rooms at Sasthamangalam in the eastern part of the town. Here, Dr Raman Thampi, a devotee of Ramakrishna and a few others, also devotees, took up the task of setting up a dispensary to render free medical service to the needy.Towards the end of August 1939, a dispensary under the name ‘Narendra Mission Charitable Dispensary’ was formally opened here. In 1940 on the request of members of Narendra Mission, Swami Tapasyananda, a senior monk from Belur Math came to Trivandrum to head the Ashrama and the Charitable Hospital. Under his guidance the spiritual discipline in the Ashrama grew and the Charitable Hospital began to expand. Today due to the efforts of
successive heads of this organization the Hospital at Sasthamangalam has come a long way from what it once was. We invite you to explore this wonderful temple of healing through this website.
